2006 Topic Competition Report For Australia

SIFE Australia hosted four financial literacy training seminars in the four regions of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria/Tasmania, and the balance including South Australia, West Australia and the Northern Territory. SIFE teams then implemented projects during the academic term. More than 300 students representing 14 SIFE Australia teams participated in a special financial literacy day and competition that included keynote speakers and panelists, with special emphasis on financial literacy and planning immediately prior to their 2006 SIFE Australia National Competition. One team was named as the National Financial Literacy champion.

National First Place

University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia

Wollongong is a former 'steel city' that is experiencing all the structural readjustment problems that are common in such communities. The rate of unemployment was running at 3.2% more than the national average, prompting SIFE UOW to offer a series of 'after hours' seminars on their campus. They obtained cooperation from a range of government agencies and help from their academic staff in specialty areas such as taxation and company law. Sixty-seven unemployed adults attended the seminars and gave positive feedback on how their lives had improved for financial education training.
