Springfield, Missouri, USA - SIFE World Headquarters has now released a three-year global report highlighting the impact of the HSBC Financial Literacy Programme, which operated in 29 countries throughout 2005, 2006, and 2007. As reported by SIFE teams, nearly 17,000 university students worked with more than 416,000 individuals to better their understanding and application of financial literacy concepts.
The report summarizes projects delivered by university teams under a grant program, funded by the HSBC Global Education Trust and HSBC. SIFE teams worked to teach financial literacy to elementary children, middle school students, senior high schools, university students, unemployed adults, couples, seniors, and entrepreneurs. Each SIFE team identifies a need in the community and determines how to help teach financial literacy.
Additionally, some countries offer competitive events for SIFE teams to compete called Topic Competitions. Highlights are also shared for those countries including Australia, Canada, Egypt, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
The HSBC Global Education Trust and HSBC have been sponsors to SIFE globally since 2005, and in October 2007 HSBC renewed the program with grants intended to total USD 2.5 million through 2010.
“The impact of this program is remarkable,” said Bruce Nasby, Executive Vice President of SIFE International. “With the support of the HSBC Global Education Trust and HSBC, our SIFE students have been equipped to create economic opportunities that otherwise might not have been available in their communities. About half the participants involved were youths who learned the skills they need to be successful in our increasingly competitive society. Additionally, nearly 20 percent of the SIFE team projects focused on financial success skills for women entrepreneurs who will experience the freedom of financial independence through entrepreneurship.”
